1. Be a graduate of an accredited high school or have an equivalency certificate;
2. Must possess an appropriate valid Texas Drivers License.
3. Class D TCEQ Water/Wastewater Certifications obtainable within 1 year.
4. Class C TCEQ Water/Wastewater Certifications obtainable within 3 years.
5. Desire to do the work.
6. Ability to work with minimal supervision and carry out duties.
7. Good physical health, ability to lift 70 pounds.
8. Ability to work cooperatively with assisting other departments.
9. Ability to read and follow instructions from manuals, identify and order parts, materials and supplies.
10. Ability to effectively deal with the public.
11. Experience with pumps, hoses, small engines preferred.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Under the immediate supervision of the Director of Public Works, work shall consist of maintenance and repair of the water and sewer system of the city including all existing and any future wells or water sources, water transmission or distribution lines, pump houses, treatment facilities, sewer lines, septic tanks, and sewage disposal facilities, etc. Acceptable safe practices must be followed in the performance of all work.

The operator shall:
- Operate pumping equipment to transfer raw water to treatment plant or distribute processed water to residential, commercial and industrial establishments: turns valves, pulls levers, and flips switches to operate and control pumps that transfer water from reservoirs or wells to the treatment plant, or to transfer processed water to consumers.
- Read flow meters and gauges to regulate equipment according to water consumption and demand.
- Inspect equipment to detect malfunctions, such as pump leaks or worn bearings.
- Repairs and lubricates equipment, using hand tools.
- Records data such as utilization of equipment, power consumption, and water output in log.
- Controls treatment plant machines and equipment to purify and clarify water for human consumption and consumer use.
- Operate and control electric motors, pumps and valves to regulate flow of raw water into treatment plant.
- Adjust automatic devices that admit specified amounts of chemicals into tanks to disinfect, deodorize, clarify and treat water.
- Repair and lubricates machines and equipment, using hand tools and power tools.
- Test water samples to determine acidity, color and impurities.
- Operate heavy equipment, such as maintainer, backhoe, tractor, or dump truck as required or instructed.
- Assist in the set up of traffic control devices as necessary.
- Provide quality customer service to city staff, the general public, and all other work contacts.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
The operator may be assigned other duties related to Streets and Drainage, Parks/Grounds Maintenance, Solid Waste Collection and Fleet/Building Services
As deemed necessary by the Director of Public Works.
