Rabies - How it Travels: Rabies is spread through infected animal saliva and occurs mainly in bats, skunks, foxes, and raccoons who can infect domestic dogs, cats, and livestock. A rabid animal bites or scratches a person. The incubation period in humans is about two months. The virus infects the central nervous system, travels to nerves, and multiples in other organs. The brain becomes inflamed. Death can occur. Rabies can be prevented if the bitten person gets treatment quickly. Make sure pets have current rabies shots.
